It’s no secret that I (Note: Fratello editor Daan de Groot) am still looking for a multi-time zone timepiece to add to my watch collection. I considered many options, including the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra World Time. However, I have never tried it on before because I feel that the 43mm size is too big for my 17cm wrist. But after wearing the new Aqua Terra World Time watch for more than a week, I realized that maybe I was wrong all along, especially now that a new titanium model is available.
The multi-time zone timepiece can display the time in multiple time zones simultaneously, which immediately makes people think of travel and vacation. Of course, I spend most of my vacation in the same time zone. In theory, it’s exciting to know that a watch could potentially accompany you around the world. In addition, another reason why I like this type of watch is that it has a variety of designs. The design of the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra world time watch may be more complicated than ordinary watches, but it is just what I like.
Omega’s new Seamaster Aqua Terra world time watch
The Aqua Terra World Time 43mm watch was released in 2017. The original platinum model was limited to 87 pieces. Two years later, the regular production stainless steel blue version made its debut. Also launched in the same year was the Sedna Gold model. Recently, Omega launched the third and fourth models. The stainless steel model is decorated in green and comes with a stainless steel bracelet or a green rubber strap; while the titanium model is black and gray and comes with a black rubber strap. Both models feature matching brushed ceramic bezels.
The watch is still equipped with the Omega 8938 coaxial movement, which has passed the Master Chronometer certification approved by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) and can withstand magnetic fields up to 15,000 Gauss. The 8938 movement vibrates at a frequency of 25,200 times per hour (3.5 Hz), has a 60-hour power reserve, and can track time in multiple time zones. Through the see-through case back, you can also admire the movement’s rhodium-plated surface and Omega’s signature Arabic-style Côtes de Genève. Of course, in terms of finishing, the look and feel of the dial is no less impressive.
The difference is more than just color matching
The stainless steel model and the titanium model not only have different materials and colors, but also have different dial finishes. Please note that the green dial of the stainless steel model is decorated with vertical lines, representing the warp lines, just like the previous stainless steel blue dial model. The difference is that the new hands and time scales are made of Moonshine 18K gold. All city names except London are also printed in gold.
The titanium model has no vertical lines on the dial. Instead, it has a light gray grained effect that complements the brushed grade 2 titanium case. The rest of the details on the dial are mostly black or white, with the embossed city names standing out. Omega uses laser ablation technology to precisely remove excess material. The center of the dial of both the stainless steel and titanium models retains a delicate pattern of the Earth looking down from the North Pole, with a 24-hour scale ring made of plexiglass outwards. The domed sapphire crystal protects the entire dial and is treated with anti-reflective coating on both sides.
Real perception, real experience
The stainless steel green plate model feels closest to the popular stainless steel blue plate model, and it is definitely the more conventional and market-oriented style among the new models. The green bezel makes it look eclectic to a certain extent, and the gold details take it to another level. In my opinion, this watch is a bit more than expected. Of course, the wearing effect may also affect my opinion.
The new watch has a diameter of 43 mm, a distance of 50 mm between the upper and lower lugs, and a thickness of 14.1 mm. Although I usually don’t like watches that are filled with a lot of black elements, among the new works, the titanium model with black and gray color scheme is undoubtedly my favorite, especially considering that my wrist is only 17 cm.
Lighter weight and better feel
Compared with the stainless steel Aqua Terra world time watch, the titanium model is like a more dynamic “little brother”. The titanium model comes with a black rubber strap, weighs about 93 grams, and feels good in hand. At the same time, it is more elegant than the stainless steel model. The dial is still rich in information, but not as “crowded” as the green dial model and the blue dial model. Therefore, the lighter weight and flat dial make the titanium model a completely different wearing experience. I mean, better.
Regardless of the style, crown control is deeply satisfying. The movement winds very smoothly and setting the time and date is effortless. Omega offers textured rubber straps for the Aqua Terra series, and I’m a big fan. These straps look and feel great and match the watch perfectly.
Innovative and popular
Calling the new Aqua Terra world time watch a “new timepiece” would be an exaggeration. But I do think it’s a good and much needed update to the series. The ceramic bezel makes the watch more scratch-resistant while also adding a touch of character. For those who prefer steel watches, the green dial model provides another option (compared to the blue dial model). However, in my opinion, the most important update is the titanium version, which is actually very close to a “new timepiece”.
With a lighter overall weight and a more relaxed dial design, the titanium model provides a very different hands-on experience from the stainless steel model. The titanium version not only looks more dynamic, but more importantly, makes the larger watch more comfortable to wear, especially for someone with a smaller wrist like mine.
